Case Study: Extension of shopping centre provides Newcastle with more retail floor space
Our compulsory purchase team acted jointly for Newcastle City Council and Capital Shopping Centres as compensation valuers and letting agents for Eldon Square shopping centre.
The extension of Eldon Square was the first phase in a scheme to provide Newcastle city centre with more retail floorspace. The scheme was also set to coincide with Newcastle’s 2008 Capital of Culture bid.
Richard Farr, in our compulsory purchase team, managed the CPO process, which included attending public inquiry and the settlement of compensation.
The project included major highway works and the relocation of the main transport interchange, including service yards.
We acquired a number of interests by agreement and negotiated the remaining compensation claims on the city’s behalf. The development work reached conclusion in 2008 and despite undergoing subsequent changes, remains at the heart of Newcastle’s extensive retail offering.
