What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

There’s not really any such thing as a typical day. In the South West we do a reasonable amount of project monitoring for banks and developers, project work for design and specification, party walls, project management and surveys. So a typical day could be anything….it will involve tea drinking at some point though.

What is your favourite building in the region, and why?

Clifton suspension bridge. Brunel’s engineering design was radical for its time, and the cynics said it would never work. It’s a practical, function-led design and not about the aesthetics, yet is extremely beautiful. It will be stood for many more years yet, even when more modern buildings have become obsolete

Tell me about one of the standout projects that you have been involved in.

I think one of my achievements ought to be Wiltshire Council’s Shurnold Offices. From an initial meeting in February to discuss turning a redundant secondary school into the Councils decant space, I’d surveyed, bought my team together, got statutory approvals, negotiated on a 2-stage contractor’s tender and delivered a £2.2M project to enable occupation by Christmas. The scheme included partial demolition, asbestos removal, car parking, complex M+E alterations, structural work, offices for 450 desks, archive and ancillary facilities such as catering kitchen and canteen - definitely one I am really proud of!

What would you change to influence the future of the industry?

More collaboration. The construction industry understands and gets the benefits of collaborative working. The property side of our industry has a long way to catch up and is currently losing out on collaborative working benefits.

If you could give one piece of business advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Don’t worry about what people think and just do it.

Name three people, dead or alive, that you would pick to work in your team.

I’d have to have Brunel (although I suspect he’d be quite a challenge to manage!); Dr Who would be useful to pop back in the Tardis to gain some more time when we need it (and visit cool alien territories); and Victoria Wood for her excellent observational comedy and northern wit – she’d be a great asset to any team.

Meet Sarah James

Sarah James joined our Newcastle property management team almost two years ago in July 2016. Following International Womans Day earlier this month we sat down with her to find out a little bit about how she got into surveying as a profession and what she would change as a female working in the property sector. How did you get into surveying as a profession? I was attracted to the Business Property Management degree at University as it had both a business and property focus and offered a career direction into surveying.  The topics covered on the course were varied and interesting, as well as being accredited by the RICS.  Following a placement year at DTZ in Leeds in 2001, I was eager to complete my degree and return to work to become Chartered.  I qualified at City of York Council before moving to Donaldsons in Leeds, which was then acquired by DTZ and took me in a full circle to where I began. I moved to Newcastle in 2011 which is a great city to live and work. What would you change as a female working in the property sector?

[fulltext] =>

It would be great to see more women in surveying, particularly in senior roles.  The key is attracting more females onto RICS accredited courses to increase the ratio and talent in the profession. It is not an obvious career path for many women encouraged from an early age and many stumble upon it via alternative routes to realise the benefits that the profession offers.

Tell me about a couple of interesting projects that you’ve worked on

Property and asset management by its nature is very busy and no two days are the same.  This keeps the job interesting as you are dealing with a diverse range of people, properties and interests in land.  As well as the reactive side and day to day management, I enjoy the proactive management involved by looking at initiatives to reduce costs or add value to a client’s portfolio.  I work with other SW disciplines to offer clients specialist advice on the development of properties, investment sales, business rates advice and dilapidations, tying everything together with management objectives.

What is it like to work at SW?

It is the people that make SW a great place.  I have the benefit of working with industry experts and being part of a firm which is not too big, enabling me to make a difference in the job I do.

Meet Ellie Cullen

How long have you been at SW? I started at SW straight out of university in September 2015. After two years, I sat my APC and am now a Chartered Surveyor in SW’s London Valuation team. The past two and half years have been non-stop, but really have flown by! How did you get into surveying as a profession? I’ve always had an interest in property and the built environment, but growing up I didn’t really know much about surveying as a profession. Whilst studying Geography and Planning at university I realised it was the property and development aspect I was really interested in. It then wasn’t until my university tutor suggested surveying as a career possibility that I really considered it as an option.

What would you change as a female working in the property sector?

I think just the gender balance statistics in general can be off-putting for some females thinking about entering the industry. If over time the male to female ratio begins to become more aligned, I think this will motivate more females to join the industry. I read somewhere that only about 15% of RICS memberships are held by females but the proportion of female surveying students is much higher, so this can only be encouraging for the future!

There have been occasions in the past where people have automatically assumed I have been arranging inspections, etc on behalf of my male counterparts. I think generally the overall perception is still that surveying is a male industry, but I’m looking forward to seeing if this changes at all throughout my career.

Tell me about a couple of interesting projects that you’ve worked on

I have recently been working on some residual valuations for development schemes in Central London and the South East. The thing I like about residual valuations is trying to piece together all the information and envisage how a site full of rubble can be transformed into something that, at the moment, is just a collection of drawings on paper!

What is it like to work at SW?

I enjoy working at SW and within the surveying profession because every day is different. It’s not an office based 9-5 job; you are always out and about meeting different people and working on such a diverse range of projects. I have always found the variety of properties and neighbourhoods in London really fascinating, and at SW I get to explore the corners of London I would never have seen otherwise.

Meet Kim Murray

Kim is an associate partner in our Manchester lease consultancy team with over 15 years' experience and recently we sat down with her to find out how she got into surveying and what she enjoys about working at Sanderson Weatherall. How did you get into surveying as a profession? "As seems to be quite common, it was family influences that made me first aware of the profession. My stepfather was a land surveyor and I often shadowed him for work experience when undertaking my A levels, when my interest was in urban geography. I wanted to go to university but also wanted a degree that was vocational rather than after 3 years not knowing what direction to take. Property surveying rather than Land surveying was suggested to me and, on looking further into this, I considered was a good route for me."

How did you get into surveying as a profession?

"As seems to be quite common, it was family influences that made me first aware of the profession. My stepfather was a land surveyor and I often shadowed him for work experience when undertaking my A levels, when my interest was in urban geography. What would you change as a female working in the property sector?

"To be honest, I find this a strange question to answer. Whilst the profession may have been considered one that was male dominated a few years ago, I am not sure that is the case today. As such, I doubt my views on what requires to be changed in the sector will be much different from anyone elses."

Tell me about a couple of interesting projects that you’ve worked on

"I have worked on some high profile contracts over the years, for the like of Barclays, Magnet, Co-operative Group however the most interesting projects are (invariably) where something has gone wrong and where the landlord or the tenant have got themselves into a bit of a pickle prior to our involvement.   Mentioning no name, I am working on a job at the moment where the landlord is attempting to seek additional rent from the tenant for failing to comply with covenants.  These are the type of jobs I find interesting – especially if (or when!) my advice can rectify the position for the client."

What is it like to work at SW?

Whilst it may be a bit over to the top to say that I somersault out of my bed and into my shoes at the prospect of another working day within SW, I have really enjoyed (and still am enjoying!) my time here. The Manchester office is like a big family and they are a very supportive bunch. Also, SW have been really understanding and flexible in providing me with the ability to continue my career post having children, and help with my strive to achieve a good work/home life balance!

Meet Jessica Burke

Jessica joined our Leeds valuation team as a placement student almost eight years ago in 2010 and recently we sat down with her to find out a little bit about her career so far and what she would change as female working in the property sector. How did you get into surveying? I fell into it really - I’ve always been interested in property and considered studying architecture at university but was deterred by the seven lengthy years required in education. Consequently, when choosing my degree I opted for ‘Real Estate’… fortunately I loved it!

What would you change as a female working in the property sector?

Being a woman working within this sector can be challenging at times. When I first qualified as a surveyor I found that the most challenging thing to overcome was first impressions and people’s perceptions of what a surveyor should be and look like, particularly when on site. However, I have found that those uncomfortable encounters have become less and less frequent as I have become more experienced. I think this has a lot to do with confidence in my own ability.

I think these perceptions have started to change, however, the industry still has a long way to go.

What is it like to work at SW?

I’m fortunate enough to be able to hand on heart say I love my job. The work is varied and my colleagues are a pleasure to work with (most of the time!).

Tell me about a couple of your more interesting projects or experiences?

Working within the valuation department I am exposed to such a wide variety of property types, ranging from the traditional industrial, retail and office sectors to golf courses, hotels, animal rendering plants (which is one I would like to forget!), whiskey distilleries and equestrian centres to name a few.

Instructions I have particularly working on are Hoar Cross Hall, Feversham Arms and Raithwaite Hall, which we have a cumulative value in excess of £35 Million.

Jo, partner and head of our Bristol Building Consultancy team commented on her recent appointment as WIP national chairman and what she has planned for the year ahead.

“I’m honoured to take on this role and at a particularly important time. The revelations of the past few months have put into sharp focus the work the industry still has to do, to address not just diversity but inclusivity. I have always believed that honesty and respect are critical to great team work and a supportive working environment, so we are all as good as we can be. And like my predecessors, I want to help ensure the industry is in better shape, to attract and retain the next generation.

“Attracting talent into the industry is critical to meet our skills shortage, but nurturing their ongoing development is equally essential to sustain a happy, diverse and high performing workforce. Women provide a huge talent pool which employers have been missing out on. Women need to be more visible, to show employers what they can achieve, both within the workforce and for the benefit of the business.

“International Women’s Day this year is focusing on a #PressforProgress campaign in an attempt to motivate people to think, act and be gender inclusive so I’m proud that Sanderson Weatherall have shown such support in my role as WIP chairman. It’s going to be an exciting year both for me personally, and the Bristol team who are in the middle of a really strong growth period.”
