It's the season of giving

Published on: 22nd December 2016

Surveyors in our Leeds office recently came together to provide a local homeless charity with a generous donation of clothes, toiletries and food.

St George’s Crypt is based in Leeds city centre and offers support for the homeless, disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Leeds and the surrounding areas.

The charity, located in St George’s Church, began over 85 years ago when the church’s crypt was opened as a shelter during the 1930s economic depression. St George’s Crypt now runs two hostels, charity shops and the crypt itself offers people a chance to get a hot meal, shower and overnight accommodation.

The collection of items was arranged by Louise Wagstaff in our accounts team and donations included jumpers, hats, gloves, deodorants, shower gels, chocolates and a selection of non-perishable food items for use in the kitchen.

Louise visited the centre to take them the donation and said: “St George’s Crypt is a local charity that does a massive amount to help support the homeless in Leeds and the neighbouring towns and we were pleased to help with our donation.

“We received a large number of items from the team in Leeds and I would like to thank everyone for their generosity. I was lucky enough to be shown around St George’s Crypt earlier this week and it was brilliant to meet the incredible volunteers, hear their stories and to see the fantastic work that goes on.”

Day at the movies for Rowlands Gill charity members

A group of older people from Rowlands Gill have enjoyed an extra special day out at the cinema in Newcastle thanks to a charity initiative. The group were treated to a private film screening with tea and cakes at the Tyneside Cinema.  The event was hosted by our Newcastle office in partnership with the Rowlands Gill Live At Home Scheme.  This community-based voluntary project offers support to older people who are at risk of being socially isolated or are unable to go out as much as they used to.

Commenting on the event, Rowlands Gill Live at Home Scheme Manager Tracy Dixon said: “We were very grateful that Sanderson Weatherall and the Tyneside Cinema arranged this special screening.  For some of our members it was the first time they had been to the cinema in years and everyone really enjoyed the experience.”

Rowlands Gill Live At Home helps its members to regain their lost confidence and to become part of local life once more by arranging regular activity groups for them to attend.  The scheme also provides volunteer visitors and hosts a weekly dementia lunch club, along with a host of other services.

Shona Baxter, from our property management team in Newcastle, who helped arrange the event, said: “We were very happy to be able to host the guests from the Rowlands Gill Live At Home group.  It’s easy to take activities like going to the cinema for granted, but for some older people getting into town and meeting up with friends is a rare treat.  We have a longstanding relationship with the team at the Tyneside Cinema and they were more than happy to set up the private screening.”

We have committed to monitor and reduce energy usage within our office based operations and promote sustainability in transport by reducing the CO² emissions of our vehicular fleet as well as actively to encourage the use of public transport and participation in the firm's 'cycle 2 work' scheme. We also recognise that we are in a position to influence our clients to adopt sustainable and more environmentally responsible practices in the development and subsequent use of land, and procedures to help, remind and encourage all staff to promote this are incorporated within the firm's Quality Assurance Practice Area Instructions and our integrated Quality and Environmental Management System. Workplace Over the years, the firm has established an enviable record for the high quality of training given to the staff and this is widely recognised in the industry by our clients and competitors alike. We remain committed to the personal development of every employee of the firm to ensure they reach their full potential. We take our responsibility to build an inclusive and supportive working environment very seriously. We shall ensure a high level of business performance while minimising and effectively managing risk ensuring that we uphold the values of honesty, partnership and fairness in our relationships with all our stakeholders. Our contracts aim to clearly set out the agreed terms, conditions and the basis of our relationship and operate in a way that safeguards against unfair business practices. To ensure that all SW employees are able to offer their time to support a project in their local area, the firm’s Community Investment Programme enables staff members from any area of the business and across all our offices to contribute up to 14 hours per year to community volunteering opportunities and activities facilitated by the firm. We have also introduced an internal Volunteer Centre which enables staff to easily locate information on up and coming opportunities to engage in community challenges, projects that are relevant to the business and/or the communities we operate. The firm also undertakes work on a ‘pro bono’ basis, where this is considered relevant and appropriate. We try very hard through our business activities to ensure we maintain our position as one of the leading firms of independent Chartered Surveyors and Property Consultants in the country.

We fully recognise that our business activities directly and indirectly impact on the environment, our people, our clients and suppliers and the wider community – and have therefore developed our Corporate Social Responsibility policy to focus on these particular strands.

Environment

We promote Environmental Responsibility throughout the business and all our offices operate a certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The firm has policies and procedures in place to reduce overall waste to UK landfill and increase the level of recycling in respect of resource consumption. We have committed to monitor and reduce energy usage within our office based operations and promote sustainability in transport by reducing the CO² emissions of our vehicular fleet as well as actively to encourage the use of public transport and participation in the firm's 'cycle 2 work' scheme.

Manchester team on hand to aid with canal clear up

Staff from our Manchester office recently took a trip across the Pennines to team up with the Canal & River Trust and help clear part of the flood-hit waterways in Leeds. Flooding in the city at the end of 2015 was some of the worst ever seen on the region’s historic waterways and caused damage to bridges, embankments and canal walls. The floodwaters also left behind an array of rubbish and other debris as well as a coating of mud and silt.

The charity cares for 2,000 miles of historic waterways in England & Wales and we as a firm we have a long standing relationship with them, providing the Trust, and its predecessor, British Waterways, with a range of valuation, advisory and agency services to help service its operational and non-operational estate.

Becca Dent, volunteer development coordinator for the Canal & River Trust said; “The Boxing Day floods were some of the worst we’ve ever seen on our waterways and they’ve left a trail of damage and disruption in their wake.

“Here in Leeds you can still see rubbish and other debris dumped on the towpath and clinging to fences and it means that a visit to the riverside isn’t as enjoyable as it should be. The volunteers have really helped to get things back to looking their best and ensure that local people have an attractive and enjoyable place to escape to.”

We were joined in the clear up by Leeds-based Ward Hadaway solicitors, who helped to clear the rubbish that had been left along the Aire & Calder Navigation near Fearns Wharf. We also replanted a mature holly tree that was washed away and reinstated a riverside garden that was destroyed by the force of the floodwaters.

Simon Heather, Partner in our Manchester office said, “This is the second time we have undertaken this type of work for the Canal & Trust – having previously crewed the Trust’s litter boat in 2013.  When we heard of the damage caused by the recent flooding in Leeds, we felt compelled to respond to the call for volunteers and offer our help.  Although exhausting, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding day for all involved”.

The Trust has also launched an appeal to help rebuild canals in the heart of flood-hit communities such as those along the Calder & Hebble Navigation.

The Trust’s appeal will help rebuild and reopen historic waterways helping waterside communities, where life has been turned upside down, to recover. To find out more about the appeal please visit canalrivertrust.org.uk/donate/flood-appeal/.
