Alan Shearer Centre wins Gold SPATA award

The Alan Shearer Centre Hydrotherapy Pool, which opened last year, has won a Gold SPATA award for ‘Special Requirement Pool of the Year’.

The Alan Shearer centre, which is located in Newcastle, is a specialist respite, residential and social facility for people with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments. The centre is set in over an acre of private land and it is the North East’s only short break centre with its own on-site activity centre.

Our building consultancy and architecture teams designed and developed the luxury hydrotherapy pool facility for the centre, working alongside specialist pool designers and occupational therapists.

The pool includes a number of water features designed to provide sensory experiences to users, including a Jacuzzi, under water swim jets, massaging water shoot and alight up waterfall feature. A flexible lighting design provides users with the option to change the atmosphere within the pool area, ranging from bright lights or a sensory environment.

To support the luxury hydrotherapy pool facility we also created a fully accessible changing room with access to the pool via a hoist system and a shower trolley and body dryer to enhance the user experience.

Greggs appoint SW Architecture for office refurbishment

Our in-house architecture team, SW Architecture, has won the contract to refurbish food-on-the-go retailer Greggs’ Innovate House building at Balliol Business Park in North Tyneside. The commission will see us consult Greggs on architecture, interior design, building surveying, quantity surveying, principle designer services and project management. The Innovate House project follows our recent fit out of Greggs House at Quorum Business Park, and is part of the bakery giant’s ongoing commitment to provide a modern and efficient working environment for its office staff. Commenting on the project, Garry Graham, Head of Shop Development at Greggs, said: “Sanderson Weatherall are a trusted and reliable partner whom we are excited to work with on this significant development”.

Work has now begun on the 18,000 sq ft refurbishment project, which will house 200 of Greggs existing workforce and is due to complete in the second quarter of 2017.

McAleer & Rushe Group, which owns and operates the St James’ Gate development, tasked us with the refurbishment and modernisation of the expansive reception area to 2 St James’ Gate, an eight-storey office building on Railway Street.

Our architecture team created the visual concept for the entrance and reception space, which has been designed to create a striking first impression and appropriately reflect the high quality of the development.  St James’ Gate’s current tenants include Big Lottery Fund, Serco and UBS.

The refurbishment project, which was completed in September 2015, was managed by head of facilities management, Alex Slack, and the spectacular design concept was created by architectural assistant Gillian Smith. 

The newly-designed space features a digital wall covering showing a city scape of Newcastle’s famous landmarks including the Tyne Bridge and the Baltic.  The refit also included redecorating work and the installation of a corian-made reception desk which completes the high-end design.

Commenting on the design and refurbishment, Stephen Davey of McAleer & Rushe Group, said: “2 St James’ Gate provides excellent office space in a much sought after prime city centre location. Our desire was to create a welcoming yet impressive reception area to match the prestige of the development and thanks to the expertise of Sanderson Weatherall we have achieved that.”

Our local knowledge allowed us to engage trusted local contractors to carry out the work on the refit and refurbishment works making the project cost effective whilst benefitting the wider local economy.
