National rating team strengthened with partner appointment

Published on: 5th September 2017

We have recently strengthened our national rating team with the appointment of Rob Cohen, who joins our Leeds office as a partner.

Rob has 12 years’ experience specialising in the provision of rating advice for clients across the North of England. During this time he has been instrumental in saving clients over £25million on their business rates bills.

He joins the firm following six years at Colliers in Leeds, and five years prior to that working in our Newcastle office. Commenting on his return, Rob said “Sanderson Weatherall has a long history of providing expert property advice in the market I operate and has a strong team of experts and loyal client base due to their service excellence. I was particularly keen to return due to their clear strategy for the future and the opportunities this presents. I believe the company is going places and want to be part of that journey.”

Rob will be responsible for providing advice to public and private sector clients in order to mitigate their business rates liability.

Richard Farr, partner in our rating team said, “We are thrilled to welcome Rob back to Sanderson Weatherall. Having worked with him previously I have no doubt that he will be an invaluable asset to our team.

“Rob’s reputation and vast experience will help to cement our reputation as one of the leading business rates advisors and we look forward to moving forward with Rob on board.”

Changes in the way business rates are appealed

On the 1st April 2017 the new rating lists were published across England and Wales and from that date, businesses looking to challenge their business rates were required to do so through HMRC’s Government Gateway. One of the biggest changes to business rates following the 2017 Rating Revaluation was the introduction of the ‘Check, Challenge, Appeal’ in an attempt from the government to reform the rating appeal system. A key component of the new system is that it will be necessary for ratepayers to set up a secure Government Gateway account, add their properties and appoint an agent to act on their behalf by electronically managing the check, challenge and appeal process.

Valuation Office Agency to cut jobs despite thousands of outstanding appeals

Over the weekend, it was publicised by the government that they are poised to announce a number of job cuts at the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), the government department that deals with business rates. The plans to downsize will see three-quarters of the VOA’s senior officers axed as the closure of 19 of the 50 regional offices is expected over the next three years. The announced cuts are part of a long-term goal of cutting 1,000 jobs in the VOA, almost a third of all staff, by 2021. Click here to view the original article from the Mail on Sunday.

Rob Cohen, partner in our business rates team, commented, “I am disappointed by the government’s decision to announce further cuts at such a critical time for many businesses across the country.

“The VOA are over stretched as it is and have struggled to cope for a number of years in effectively disposing of appeals; there are currently around two hundred thousand appeals outstanding against rating assessments and these job cuts will not help.

“What the VOA really need is more funding and extra resources, not further cuts. It is almost as if they are being set up to fail, lending weight to many sceptics view that the Government will seek to privatise them in due course.”

If you’d like to find out more about business rates and how to appeal your rating bill, please contact Rob Cohen on 0113 221 6120 or email him at rob.cohen@sw.co.uk.
