Valuation Office Agency to cut jobs despite thousands of outstanding appeals

Published on: 21st August 2017 Over the weekend, it was publicised by the government that they are poised to announce a number of job cuts at the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), the government department that deals with business rates. The plans to downsize will see three-quarters of the VOA’s senior officers axed as the closure of 19 of the 50 regional offices is expected over the next three years. Route confirmed for second phase of HS2

The Western leg of phase 2b is set to run between Crewe and Manchester and the Eastern leg between the West Midlands and Leeds. Rates relief process plagued by delays

Published on: 17th August 2017 The Government has recently intervened in an attempt to speed up business rates relief to thousands of small businesses across the country that have been adversely affected. Despite being promised millions of pounds of support in March’s Budget, many firms who lost small business rates relief as a consequence of the 2017 revaluation are still waiting for their bills to be adjusted and relief to be applied. During the 2017 revaluation the majority of businesses saw little change to their bills but it is estimated that there were nearly 25,000 small companies that lost their entitlement to small business rates relief and faced rates rises of up to 3,000%.

Buccleuch Property secures sale for final plot on the former Tyne Tees TV site

Published on: 16th August 2017 UK property investor and developer, Buccleuch Property has sold a 0.57 acre site, the last remaining plot on the City Road site in Newcastle city centre for £1.7m. The site was sold to JEDS Investments. Our Newcastle agency team acted on behalf of Buccleuch Property, who purchased the former Tyne Tees TV site in 2007 and over the past ten years has released other plots from the overall 1.7 acre site for development by U Student and The Home Group.

Successful Appeal in North York Moors National Park

Published on: 15th August 2017 Our planning team recently obtained planning permission at appeal for a log cabin development in the North York Moors National Park on behalf of a private client. Prior to our involvement, the original application had been refused principally because of the sensitive landscape in which the site lies; the closest settlement to the site is Stainondale village. We were initially asked by our client to advise on whether a potential appeal would be successful. Following positive feedback, we were appointed to submit an appeal.

Hickwell Mills, which comprises of 16 units and is currently let to a total of eight tenants, was sold to ATZ developments by Leeds-based property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall.

CeX Ltd move into store on one Newcastle’s most popular retail streets

Published on: 10th August 2017 Leading European electronics store, CeX, has taken 1,377 sq ft of space on Northumberland Street, a major shopping street in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. The national retail chain specialises in the buying and selling of DVDs, video games and digital devices, and have 350 stores around the UK. They have acquired the Northumberland Street unit on a 10-year lease, and following completion of their impressive fit out, are now open for business.
